The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between perfectionism (in its adaptive and maladaptive dimensions) and early maladaptive schemas (EMS) described by Young (1999), in a young adult university population (N = 307). Furthermore, the predictive role of the EMS and schema domains on the dimensions of perfectionism was examined. The Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (APS-R, Slaney et al 2001; adapted by Arana, Keegan & Rutsztein, 2009) and the Schema Questionnaire-Short Form (SF-SQ, Young & Brown, 1994) were used. Results of the correlation analysis showed that the scale Discrepancy from the APS-R (representative of the dysfunctional aspect of perfectionism) was significantly associated with all the EMS and schema domains proposed by Young. The subscales designed to evaluate the adaptive perfectionism, also had significant associations with dysfunctional beliefs, although to a much lesser extent, and in some cases being the relationship inverse. The multiple regression analysis showed that several domains of schemas and EMS were significant predictors of maladaptive perfectionism, while for the adaptive perfectionism the only schema domain that remained a significant predictor was Overvigilance and Inhibition and the EMS Unrelenting Standards.Downloads
