Abstract

The increase in dropout cases in sports due to burnout, declining performance, emotional exhaustion and neglect in athletes were some of the reasons for our study. Our aim is to determine whether differences exist between two female sports teams throughout a season, depending on two variables (Sport Commitment and Perceived Control), which could predict the early-onset of burnout. In this course of action, we will study if there are differences between these variables, and whether they may be used as prophylactic measures to guard against the possibility of developing burnout syndrome. The samples are composed by two teams of high performance women athletes, 10 of which integrated a professional basketball team of the Spanish Female Basketball League, and 13 belonged to the Uruguayan National Select Hockey Team, both samples composed by participants between 18 and 33 years of age.   All participants were assessed using the Burnout Inventory for Athletes (IBD), the visual analogue scale Perceived Control (VAS) and Sport Commitment Questionnaire (SCQ). There were no significant differences between the two groups or the two administrations in most dimensions assessed.
