In the last decade, various initiatives have been launched to improve the distribution of Uruguayan cinema, which has historically struggled to compete with the market dynamics dominating the commercial circuit. Notable among these efforts is the establishment of a new circuit for national cinema through public venues and collaboration with the Cinemateca Uruguaya, as well as the development and launch of the streaming platform CineUY. In this interview, we speak with Gabriel Massa, one of the most significant distributors and cultural managers of national and independent cinema in Uruguay, about the main challenges in distribution and the unique aspects of CineUY: its potential as a repository of national cinema and the weaknesses that have hindered its broader visibility.
