Call for papers thematic dossier: Museums in the digital society
CALL FOR PAPERS
THEMATIC DOSSIER
Museums in the digital society (vol. 40, 2026)
Guest editors: Ruth Fernández1, Pablo Escandón2 and Eva Hernández2
Deadline for submissions: January 15, 2026
Dixit invites academics, researchers, and professionals to contribute to a thematic dossier with academic articles on the role of museums in the digital society.
Museums are conceived as social institutions (Martín Serrano, 2008) in continuous transformation; cyberculture (Lévy, 2007) and new media (Manovich, 2006) have changed consumption, content, audiences, and experiences both in situ and on devices, thereby also changing and expanding exhibition formats, which now take advantage of media convergence (Jenkins, 2009). Museums, as spaces for communicative mediation (Escandón, 2020), are influenced by technology, and the use of media for the explanation, dissemination, and dissemination of content is vital for these repositories of culture and heritage in their search for new audiences.
The aim of this dossier is to bring together research that contributes to the analysis and reflection on communication or media practices linked to the field of museography, new technologies and new media in museum and exhibition spaces, and the impact of AI on museography and user experience.
Manuscripts addressing any of the following topics will be welcome:
- Institutional communication by museums through social media.
- Innovative museum campaigns linking transmedia strategies.
- Museums and AI: uses and applications for content creation and dissemination.
- Studies on museum audiences in relation to new technologies.
- Virtual reality and augmented reality in the museum environment.
- Accessibility and expanded and complementary narratives.
- Digital museums, mobile museums, and cybermuseums.
