Abstract. The family has experienced changes in its constitution, modification and dissolution
patterns. Reality shows that there has been a significant increase in the number of blended
families, which are those based either on marriage or concubinage and whose members
have children from previous relationships. This article deals with some institutions of Civil
Law so as to determine whether the Uruguayan legal system provides the members of this
special family structure with the necessary tools.
