About the Journal

Focus and scope

Revista de Derecho is a peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes original and unpublished articles on public and private law and related legal disciplines, such as philosophy of law, with a focus on Uruguayan and Ibero-American law. It publishes two issues per year (January-June and July-December) under a continuous publication model, and since 2024 it accepts preprints. 

The objective of Revista de Derecho is to provide a real opportunity for all jurists and those interested in legal matters, Uruguayan and foreigners, to publish and have access to articles of high academic level, jurisprudence notes, relevant sentences and bibliographic novelties on current legal issues for the profession, teaching and research.

The journal is indexed in Latindex; distributed in the following databases: SciELO, EBSCO and Dialnet; and registered in Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), LA ReferenciaLatinREV, SILO and Timbó. It is also a member of AURA and is on the social network X.

Section policies

Doctrine. Original and unpublished articles submitted to double-blind peer review. These articles should have a minimum length of 3,000 words and a maximum of 10,000 words (excluding references).

Jurisprudence. Judgments with their respective commentary submitted to double-blind peer review. All jurisprudence commentaries must be accompanied by the complete text of the corresponding sentence. These articles should have a minimum length of 2,000 words and a maximum of 8,000 words (excluding references).

Brief communication. Scientific communication submitted to peer review, double-blind system. Its objective is to present the development of a study that can be a field or intervention study, with a minimum length of 2,000 words and a maximum of 4,000 words (excluding references).

Essay and research. This section receives bibliographic reviews, and research advances and results, between 2,000 and 6,000 words (excluding references). Articles submitted to this section are evaluated by the journal team.

Review. This section receives reviews of legal books, national or foreign, published in the year of the review or one year before, between 1,000 and 3,000 words (excluding references). Articles submitted to this section are evaluated by the journal team.

Frequency of publication

As of 2023, the journal Revista de Derecho is published in the continuous publication mode, with two issues per year. The first issue from January to June and the second from July to December.

Free publication

Publication in Revista de Derecho is free of charge for authors. The costs of the editorial process are covered by the Universidad Católica del Uruguay. The journal does not charge for subscriptions; access to the full text of published articles is free of charge.

Revista de Derecho publishes articles in Spanish, English and Portuguese. In the case of articles submitted in English and Portuguese, once they are accepted for publication, the authors are committed to ensure the professional quality of the final version of the text.

Open access policy

This journal provides open access to all its content, based on the principle that providing the public with free access to research helps a greater global exchange of knowledge. Under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) users have the right to view, download, store, print, search, index and link to the texts, as long as  the original source and the person in charge of its authorship is cited in all cases and situations.

Authors are free to archive their published article in institutional repositories and/or on their personal web pages, always mentioning the publication in Revista de Derecho with the corresponding data.

Following the Guidelines for Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) in Journal Policies and Practices, and in compliance with Level 1 of Guideline 2 (Data Transparency), authors are required to include in the articles that result from original research a section on “Data Availability in which they report whether the dataset used in their research is available and, if so, where to access it. 

Digital preservation policy

Through the LOCKSS system (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe), the journal Revista de Derecho guarantees a permanent and secure archive. LOCKSS is an open-source program developed by the Stanford University Library that allows libraries to preserve selected web journals by regularly searching registered journals to collect and archive newly published content. Each file is continuously validated against records from other libraries, so that any damaged or lost content can be restored. The articles have DOI (Digital Object Identifier) granted by the Crossref registration agency. Through the PKP Preservation Network, preservation is also provided for any journal that is in Open Journal Systems.
